About

Reshavan Naicker is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and dreamer working primarily in bookmaking, installation, and sculpture. Their creative practice is driven by curiosity and the desire to find a more complete means of expressing themselves and their ideas. They frequently engage contemporary African identities, anti-colonial linearities, ancestral memory and excluded histories, and the archive.

Their interest in the visual arts was first realised through an architectural drafting class that they took in high school (the only creative class on offer). This led to them wanting to be an architect. After spending their first year at university focussed on architecture, they pivoted towards a broader appraoch to the visual arts.

They now hold a Bachelor of Arts focussing in the visual arts, museum studies, and art history from Bennington College, where they learnt the benefits of a self-driven education. Undoubtedly influenced by this progressive educational model, they hold a deep seated belief that, through consistent, intentional engagement, an idea will demand a particular form. This medium agnostic approach allows for a malleable creative practice, which, in turn, has provided them with experience working across various mediums.

Reshavan hopes to be constantly evolving in their approach to creating and values fresh perspectives over all else. They find inspiration through what they (or anybody they’re interacting with) are reading, writing, watching, and experiencing.
